The Pursuit Of |
"A Mind Is A Terrible |
With a population of 10 million, Guinea encompasses a very young citizenry.
43% of the population is 14 years or younger, and 54 % of the population is between the ages of 15 and 64. Over 60 % of the population is 30 years or younger. Such statistics should trigger excitement and hope. Yet a further investigation tells a different story.
First, the life expectancy at birth is 58 years. In addition, the literacy rate of the adult population, i.e., people aged 15 or above, is 39%.This means that over 6 million people cannot read or write. Now if we consider the 3.9 million educated, only 26.4 % of that population is female. Here we are talking about a population where 49.5% is female (4.95 millions).
These numbers added to the fact that over 60% of the population lives in rural areas where there are few schools, few instructors, few or nonexistent infrastructures make education the highest priority for PromoGuinée.
Why We focus on High School?

As We can see on the graph above, the enrollment rate at the Elementary level remains very high at 72%. However at the Secondary level, we have an enrollment of just 29%. Moving to the Tertiary level, only 8% make it. This is a staggering observation!
Given all these conditions and more, we at PromoGuinée strongly believe that only by tackling education in general, and the secondary and tertiary level in particular, that we will succeed at generating a self-sufficient citizenry.
